We are a network of church conferences, congregations, groups and individuals who see ourselves as part of a global family under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission is an evangelical Anabaptist “family gathering” in which African, North American and European members are working together to become an answer to Jesus’ prayer: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
We gather periodically to strengthen our collaboration in mission; we share gifts and resources among us and for the world; we visit each other to encourage each other and to develop and undertake joint projects; we volunteer time and energy for God’s mission; we work in collaboration with other Mennonite groups and agencies such as Mennonite World Conference and Mennonite Central Committee.
Leadership
AIMM is currently led by an international board, named the International Central Council (ICC). The ICC is composed of representatives from participating AIMM partners. Currently the ICC President is Calixte Bananzaro of the Evangelical Mennonite Church of Burkina Faso. The ICC meets yearly, generally in Africa.
In each country of ministry, AIMM has organized a Partnership Council (PC). Each PC brings together different mission partners. These may include national church leaders; representatives of international partners committed to mission in that country; and representatives of any local or expatriate mission workers sent by an AIMM partner and working in the country. Decisions about mission vision, strategy, personnel and funds are made in each Partnership Council during a yearly meeting at the ministry location. The goal is for full and equal participation of all partners. New Partnership Councils can be formed as ministries are identified in other countries, and as partners come together to contribute vision, personnel and funds for the work.
National AIMM boards in the USA and Canada provide a legal framework for AIMM’s North American operations. These groups support the ICC in its leadership role.
IDEAL PROFILE CANDIDATES
The next Executive Coordination team of AIMM will include two individuals who are committed Anabaptist Christians and exemplify a dynamic, growing faith in Jesus Christ. They will be energized by the call to help lead an organization towards a thriving future in a changing and complex environment. This may potentially include leading the restructuring and reimagining of AIMM, its mission, ministries, and projects. Both must be members of a Mennonite World Conference congregation (preference given to AIMM partner churches), and have a university degree. Since AIMM has members in both Africa and North America, it is important that the Executive Coordinator team also have a member in each of these contexts, with a familiarity of that context’s constituency and culture. The two roles are intended to complement and support each other, working very collaboratively with each other. The lead role will be based in Africa, and relate very closely to the members and ministries in Africa. The supporting role will be based in North America, and will oversee the AIMM administration and staff, while relating with North American supporters.
The ICC developed the following vision and key strategies for the next executive coordination team to focus on:
Balancing word and deed, the next executive coordination team will inspire church growth, integrated development, and integrated capacity building. Priority strategies include:
Advance leadership training for the diverse ministries of the church
Work at the creation of a systematic process for the assessment of projects at all levels
Implement a strategy for the long-term financial sustainability of AIMM at all levels
Working with partners, establish and lead a process for the reimagining and/or (restructuring) of AIMM
Provide support and highlight the programs, resources, and actions of local member communities
In the spirit of networking, the executive team and supporting staff will facilitate relational exchanges to connect African churches with the broader Mennonite World Conference family. Priority strategies include:
Establish systems for the encouragement of strengthening relationships through means like exchanges at all levels to increase understandings of the multiple cultures and support local partners in their church growth initiatives
Develop a robust communication system including the ability to highlight the multiple resources and gifts present in partner churches and make them available to each other
Initiate a fundraising day for contributing to AIMM
With an open heart, the executive team will invite inter-Mennonite groups to join in the mission of AIMM.
In consultation with partners, work at the appointment of a commission to develop the guidelines for new members wanting to join AIMM and recommend any necessary training for new partners.
The executive team will spread Anabaptist Mennonite values, like peacebuilding.
Encourage and assist partner churches in teaching and living out Mennonite beliefs and faith practices: Mennonite history, peace, discipleship, social justice and social aid
Development of peace trainings and processes materials that help AIMM members integrate peace in everyday life
Support inter-religious organizations in the midst of conflict or violence and communicate in ways that will help AIMM fulfill its mission
Identify people with competencies in conflict transformation, and provide training and equipping as appropriate so they are available to assist as needed
The executive team will catalyze synergy at the leadership level.
Find ways for AIMM to work with partners, inter-religious groups, and trans-local, transformational leaders, according to the biblical model, to accompany churches in resolving conflict and helping churches through leadership transitions
